[Also in Group XV] A method of producing a resistor includes the steps of (1) mixing a chemical compound having electronic semi-conducting properties (i.e. a non- electrolytic compound which deviates from strict stoichiometric form), for example, cadmium oxide, with a medium in which it is insoluble, for example, glycerol, oil or water; (2) adding to the mixture so obtained a substance soluble in the said medium, for example, gelatine; (3) milling into a paste to obtain dispersion of the compound; (4) printing or otherwise depositing the said paste on an insulating base, for example, resin-impregnated paper, and drying. The process may be modified by making the initial mixture consist of the stated medium and a mixture of two or more compounds, for example, cadmium oxide and zinc oxide, or making the initial mixture consist of the stated medium and a solid solution of two or more compounds, for example calcium oxide in cadmium oxide. The invention provides a resistor particularly suitable for inclusion in printed circuits and a preferred form of such circuit is as disclosed in Specification 651,780. In one embodiment cadmium carbonate is heated at 450‹ C. for 1 hour in air and the resulting cadmium oxide mixed into a paste with glycerol thickened with gelatine and milled until the oxide is completely dispersed and a wetting- agent of the form disclosed in Specification 675,753 is then added. The resistance ink thus prepared is printed on the insulating base and dried. The assembly may then be subjected to an applied pressure to reduce the resistivity of the deposit. In a further embodiment a mixture of cadmium oxide and zinc oxide is milled with paraffin oil and stearic acid then added to produce a smooth cream.
