Abstract

673,546. Gas purification. HUMPHREYS & GLASGOW, Ltd., WILLIAMS, N. H., and THORNE, W. F. April 18, 1950 [April 28, 1949], No. 11367/49. Class 55 (ii). A process for the removal of hydrogen sulphide from coal gas, water gas, oil gas or the like wherein the gas is passed vertically through a downwardly moving mass of iron oxide purifying material which is progressively withdrawn from the bottom of the purifier and added after revivification as necessary to the top, is characterized in that the moisture content of the oxide and the gas and the rate of downward flow of the oxide is so regulated that caking or channelling does not occur and in that the oxide is returned to the top of the bed in an incompletely revivified condition. In one form, the apparatus consists of an upright cylindrical vessel 12 having a jacket 13 for temperature regulation. Hydrated iron oxide and sawdust purifying material is fed into the vessel from a gas lock 26 and is continuously withdrawn by a shaking bar extractor 15 as described in Specification 668,855. Gas, mixed with air for in situ revivification, enters and leaves vessel 12 via pipes 27 and 28. Fouled' oxide collecting in space 16 is withdrawn periodically into a vessel 116, spent oxide for disposal being withdrawn through a gas lock 29 whilst the remainder with the addition of fresh material, when required, from a hopper 32 is lifted by an elevator 19 into a vessel 20. Water from tank 21, with the addition of an alkali such as soda ash from a box 23, is sprayed over the oxide which is then returned by a screw conveyer 25 to the vessel 26. Specification 640,065 also is referred to.
