Abstract

669,645. Electrostatic machines. CENTRE NATIONAL DE LA RECHERCHE SCIENTIFIQUE. Jan. 7, 1949 [Jan. 16, 1948], No. 487/49. Class 35. The current taken or generated by an electrostatic motor or generator is made smooth by arranging overlap between the active periods of the charge-carrying plates. The stationary plates comprise an oppositely-disposed main pair 21, 21a, separated by auxiliary plates 22, 22a, each pair being maintained at a potential, e.g. - v. and +2 v., by D.C. generators 50, 51, respectively. The rotor carries five mutually insulated charge-carrying plates connected to contact segments 23<SP>1</SP>, 23<SP>2</SP>, ... 23<SP>5</SP>, engaged in turn by the earthing brushes 24, 24a and the output brushes 25, 25a connected to the machine terminal 26. The spacing of the rotating contacts and the brushes is such that there is overlap between the active periods of the charge-carrying plates, at least one being connected to the output at any one time. Slight irregularities in output may be removed by means of variable smoothing condensers having plates rotated by the rotor shaft so that the capacity varies in the appropriate manner.
