Abstract
668,897. Casting-machines; mould and core materials; moulds. BURCHARTZ, J. Dec. 5, 1949 [May 18, 1949], No. 31199/49. Class 83 (i). To reduce the rate of cooling of cast iron in a heated centrifugal pipe-mould and to prolong its life it is coated internally with a refractory or insulating material bonded with a substance which is liquid at 80‹ to 200‹ C. and is burnt fast to the mould by heating to 300‹ to 500‹ C. Sulphite liquor, sugar solution, colophony are suitable binders and graphite, chamotte, kieselguhr and tar derivatives are suitable refractories. A second coating of the same or a similar mixture or of metallic materials may be applied. The mixture may be in granular or liquid form and be applied hot or cold to a hot or cold mould. The inner face of the unlined mould may be left rough or roughly machined or it may be roughened by a hot gas flame or burning magnesium, electron, &c. The coated mould may be brought to the required tempera. ture, e.g. 350‹ to 450‹ C. before each casting operation. The mould 1 rests on four rollers 2 journalled in a slide 3 vertically adjusted on a base 4 by screws 5, supported by inserted packing pieces, not shown, and clamped by screws 8.
