Abstract

The invention comprises quinoxaline-di-N-oxides of the formula <FORM:0668412/IV (b)/1> in which X and Y are alkyl groups having less than 5 carbon atoms and Z is hydrogen, cyano, methoxy or halogen, and their preparation from the corresponding quinoxalines or their mono-N-oxides by oxidation with per-acids. The quinoxalines may be prepared by reacting the appropriately substituted o-phenylenediamine with the appropriate 1,2-diketone, e.g. 6-chloro-2,3-dimethylquinoxaline is prepared by reacting 4-chloro-1,2-phenylenediamine with diacetyl in aqueous acetic acid medium. Examples are given of the preparation of 2,3-dimethylquinoxaline - 1,4 - di - N - oxide; 6 - chloro-, 6 - bromo- and 6-cyano-2,3-dimethylquinoxaline-1,4 - di - N - oxide; 2 - methyl - 3 - ethylquinoxaline - 1,4 - di - N - oxide; 2,3 - diethylquinoxaline - 1,4 - di - N - oxide; 2,3 - di - n - propylquinoxaline - 1,4 - di - N - oxide; 2 - methyl - 3 - n - propylquinoxaline - 1,4 - di - N - oxide; 2 - methyl - 3 - isopropylquinoxaline - 1,4 - di - N - oxide; 6 - chloro - 2,3 - di - n - propylquinoxaline - 1,4 - di - N - oxide; and 6 - methoxy - 2,3 - dimethylquinoxaline - 1,4 - di-N-oxide.
