Abstract
667,896. Spectroscopic apparatus. ANGLOIRANIAN OIL CO., Ltd., EVANS, N., and POWELL, H. July 28, 1960, No. 18905/50. Class 97 (i). A variable path-length cell for containing liquids for infra-red absorption measurements comprises a pair of rock-salt plates 1 and 2 located in parallel spaced relationship in piston and cylinder assembly, the plate 1 being removably secured to the cylinder 3 and the other plate removably secured to the piston 6 moving thereon and secured to an annular graduated collar 5 screwing at 4 on to the cylinder so that rotation of the collar adjusts the separation of the plates without affecting their parallelism, three spring-pressed plungers 10 (one only shown) eliminating backlash in the threads 4, and inlet and outlet ports 16 in the cylinder communicating with the space between the plates. The plates 1 and 2 are held respectively against machined seatings by screwed rings 12, 13, with soft washers 14, 15 interposed, so as to be readily removable. A scale 11 on the cylinder indicates the separation of the plates and the ports 16 may be closed by spring- pressed balls 18.
