Abstract
Phenylmethyldichlorosilane is prepared by heating diphenylmethylchlorosilane and diphenyldichlorosilane at a temperature of from 180 DEG to 250 DEG C. in the presence of less than 50 per cent by weight of aluminium chloride based on the total weight of chlorosilanes employed and at a pressure sufficiently low that phenylmethyldichlorosilane distills from the reaction mixture. The preferred proportion of aluminium chloride is from 0.001 to 10 per cent by weight. The preferred reaction pressure is from 40 to 60 mms. of mercury. The diphenylmethylchlorosilane and diphenyldichlorosilane may be reacted in equimolecular proportions. A number of examples are given. Triphenylchlorosilane and phenyldimethylchlorosilane are also formed.
