Abstract

663,554. Working engine cylinder-wall surfaces. PERFECT CIRCLE CORPORATION. Nov. 5, 1948 [Nov. 13, 1947], No. 28806/48. Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv). Altering physical structure; rolling annular bodies.-A tool for conditioning the internal surface of an engine cylinder comprises a support adapted to be secured to a cylinder block, a spindle, coaxial with the cylinder, rotatably carried by the support with means for feeding it axially, a number of roller-supporting blocks mounted on the end of the spindle for radial movement, each block carrying a roller having a limited castor movement in the block so that the rollers follow a helical path through the cylinder when the spindle is fed axially. When used for conditioning and expanding a sleeve 21 in an internal combustion cylinder block the apparatus for carrying out the invention comprises a support pillar and bracket 61, 52 secured to the engine cylinder block by a clamping plate 50. The bracket 52 has a nut 56 secured to it through which passes a screwed sleeve 60 having a stop collar 62 and a hand wheel 66 secured to its upper end. A rotatable spindle 63 is supported within the screwed sleeve by adjustable collars 64 and thrust bearings 65. The spindle is screwed intermediate its ends at 84 to take a sleeve member 83 which supports a further sleeve member 87 encasing a compression spring 80 which exerts a thrust through the bearing 82 on a pair of conical members 70, 71, for varying the pressure of grooving rollers 22. This thrust is balanced by springs 74 which oppose the effect of spring 80, the maximum operating diameter of the rollers being limited by a collar 81 under the spring, contacting a shoulder of a sleeve 86 closing the lower end of the encasing sleeve 87. The conical members 70, 71 are retained on the spindle 63 by a nut 73 and contain between their sloping surfaces rollersupporting blocks 77; garter springs 88 maintaining the three blocks 77 in position. The rollers 22 are rotatably carried on pins 95, Fig. 12, which are mounted off-centre in swivel supports 91 backed by thrust bearings 93. The swivel supports have stems with flattened portions 103 which coact with stop surfaces 101 to limit swivel movement to 45 degrees either side of the horizontal roller position. Operation of the hand wheel 66 feeds the apparatus through the cylinder bore, the rollers swivelling through castor action over to one of the 45- degree positions, according to whether downward or upward motion is applied. Pressure on the rollers is varied by the adjusting sleeve 87 and the starting position for groove-rolling is varied by adjusting collars 64 prior to the rolling operation. The rollers 22 may be forced to roll along helices of different pitch between the maximum 45-degree positions by driving the spindle 63 at different speeds through a driving connection at 68. Various surface configurations may be given to the inside of the sleeve or cylinder, the simplest form being shown in Fig. 2, with the rollers operating at 45-degree positions. The bore may afterwards be honed to remove the peaks of the patterned surface so formed. Cylindrical rollers and those having different amounts of crowning may be used.
