Abstract

661,193. Pulse circuits. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., and MELVILLE, W. S. Jan. 11, 1950 [Jan. 12, 1949], No. 889/49. Class 40 (vi). A protective device for the pulse circuits of a radar equipment comprises a normally non- conductive discharge device which is connected in series with a thermal relay across the circuit conductors where an undefined abnormally high voltage may appear, the discharge tube conducting in the presence of such a voltage so that after an interval the contacts of the thermal relay operate to shut down that part of the equipment where the voltage originates. The Figure shows a protective circuit for a radar transmitter in which the voltage from an alternator A charges a pulse-forming network CL via a step-up transformer T1, T2, the network CL being periodically discharged through the pulse transformer T3, T4 by the triggered thyratron V1 to produce a high voltage pulse across the magnetron V2. If the voltage across the valve V1 or V2 exceeds the normal safe value, neon tubes S1 or S2 respectively will conduct the current of either flowing through the heater element E of the thermal relay TR will cause the contact Cr to open and block the connection between the alternator A and the input transformer T1, T2. At least one of the members of the contact Cr comprises a bi-metallic strip and the discharge tubes S1, S2 may be of the type described in Specification 582,995.
