Abstract

A method of separating the components of fatty oils applicable to the extraction of vitamin A fatty acid ester from fish liver oil and the separation of partial glycerides such as the mono-, di- and tri-laurines, consists in dialyzing such mixtures, by means of a membrane of a high polymeric substance which exhibits swelling with fatty oils, such as rubber, methyl or ethyl poly-acrylic acid ester, polyvinyl chloride, or polyvinyl chloride copolymerized with a small amount of polyvinylidene chloride. The rubber may be vulcanized. The course of the dialysis may be influenced by the polarity of the rubber, as when rubber containing polar groups such as the nitrile group is used, by the polarity of added solvents, by the use of solvents outside the membrane, and by the temperature. In the case of vitamin A, the dialysis is effected in the presence of petroleum ether while in the case of the separation of glycerides, a mixture of petroleum ether and alcohol is used. U.S.A. Specification 2,408,625 and Specifications 592,587, [Group III], and 592,625, [Group II], are referred to.ALSO:A method of separating the components of fatty oils or their derivatives containing oily constituents, or of extracting substances contained therein, consists in dialyzing such mixtures, with or without a solvent, by means of a membrane of a high polymeric substance which exhibits swelling with fatty oils. The high polymeric substance may be rubber, which may be vulcanized, methyl or ethyl poly-acrylic acid ester, polyvinyl chloride, or polyvinyl chloride copolymerized with a small amount of polyvinylidene chloride. The process is applicable to the extraction of vitamin A fatty acid ester, to the separation of partial glycerides, and to the treatment of polymerized oils. The course of the dialysis may be influenced by the polarity of the rubber, as when rubber containing polar groups such as the nitrile group is used, by the polarity of added solvents, by the use of solvents outside the membrane, and by the temperature. Examples are given of the demucilaging of crude groundnut oil, of the separation of soya oil phosphatides, of the extraction of vitamin A fatty acid ester from fish liver oil, of the extraction of polymers from dehydrated castor oil and from linseed oil, of the separation of partial glycerides (mono-, di-, and tri-laurines), of the purification of benzine extractions of fat from the nickel catalyst used in the hardening of fat, of the purification of herring oil, and of the purification of refinery acid oils from the splitting of refinery soap. In all the above cases the separation is carried out in the presence of petroleum ether and also of alcohol in the case of the glycerides. U.S.A. Specification 2,408,625 and Specifications 592,587 and 592,625, [Group II], are referred to.
