Abstract

651,946. Protective arrangements. MIEREMET, J. G. Oct. 25, 1948, No. 27638. [Class 38 (iv)] Apparatus for reducing potential difference in the earth's electric field at closely spaced points comprises two horizontally spaced stacks of conductive elements, one stack consisting of a copper or like metal plates 14, 11 separated by one or more bars or wires 15 of silver or other precious metal and the other stack consisting of metal plates 19, 16 (e.g. of copper) thinly coated with another metal (e.g. nickel) and separated by one or more precious metal wires or bars 20, the upper plates of both stacks being covered by lead 13, 18 which is insulated from the plates by fibre 12, 17. Copper strips 21, 22 may be disposed on either side of the plate 19, as shown, and brass strips similarly disposed in relation to the plate 14. The several elements of the stacks may be mounted in boards 5-10 carried within a vented plywood or " grandbassam " box which is free of nails or other metal fasteners. The apparatus is arranged with the common plane of symmetry of the two stacks perpendicular to the magnetic meridian plane, the uncoated being to the east of that plane.
