Abstract
640,190. Supply systems for arc and discharge lamps. MOLE-RICHARDSON (ENGLAND), Ltd., and HALLETT, C. G. H. Nov. 18, 1947,_ No. 30545. [Class 38 (iv)] Cooling water for a high-powered arc or vapour discharge lamp flows in direct contact with (and thus cools) a conductor carrying current to the lamp and having such resistance. as to provide all or most of the ballast necessary for the lamp. The conductor may be in the form of a copper pipe within the lamp house. Figs. 1 and 2 show an arrangement in which an arc c is supplied with current through copper pipes h, j and resistance conductors d carried within flexible hose lengths a, b through which cooling water is conveyed to the arc electrodes. The conductors may be of helical form, with or without an iron wire core, to increase their inductance. The hose lengths are provided at their ends with conductive ferrules n connected to the ends of the conductors and by which the lengths may be connected to the pipes h, j both electrically and hydraulically. An insulating tube m may be provided between the electrodes to permit circulation of water whilst providing for their electrical isolation. The connection between the pipes and hose lengths includes an insulating tube t with packing glands o, q and a switch contact u which bridges surfaces p, r of the glands.
