Abstract
639,354. Yielding-drive tapping machines. NORBURY, E. March 11, 1948, No. 7444. [Class 83 (iii)] [Also in Group XXXV] A tapping or like machine has the direction of rotation of the cutting tool temporarily reversed when loaded to a predetermined extent and includes relatively rotatable magnet and armature elements coacting with one another for transmitting torque to the tool until the torque exceeds a predetermined value dependent upon the magnetic flux, whereupon slip will occur and the driven element will " kick lock " temporarily reversing the drive. The spindle 12 may be driven from an electric motor and is secured to two non-magnetic cheekmembers 27 enclosing and attached to a horse-shoe magnet element 20 with poles 21. The cheek members are secured at 26 to a cylindrical non-magnetic casing 25 within which an armature 22 is rotatable. The latter is keyed to the spindle 17 which drives the tap 14 through a pin-andslot connection 16. The magnet may be permanent or an electro-magnet and in each case the flux may be varied to give a torque of predetermined magnitude.
