Abstract
638,809. Sewing-machines. BOOK MACHINERY CO., Ltd., and KITCAT, A. J. July 12, 1948, No. 18704. [Class 112] [Also in Group XV] Book-stitching machines; feed by wheels and the like. Thread is passed through the work by a plurality of needles carried by a rotary support. The needles are brought successively to the operating point, and act on the same length of thread ; they are pivotally mounted on the support, with means for controlling the direction in which they project. The work is fed along a saddle by endless belts. In the embodiment shown, signatures are stitched by passing thread-loops through perforations from inside the fold and securing the thread in the fold by adhesive, the loops being secured, in a subsequent operation, by adhesive beneath a backing strip or to a binding. The signatures or pamphlets are fed in succession, partly opened, along an inverted V-shaped saddle 1 by endless belts 31, 32, the work-engaging part of the latter lying in a recess in the face of the saddle a little below the apex ; they pass, beneath a guide 64, first over a series of perforating members 58 and then over a series of needles 15 having grooved ends to pass through the perforations, loops from a length of thread or fine wire led through a guide 27. The needles 15 are pivoted on pins 59 within the periphery of a disc 4 and project through apertures, in the periphery, which limit their angular movement ; they are biassed by springs to a position such that they are vertical at the point where they make contact with the work and are held vertical by the work until they descend clear, when they are returned to the initial position by their springs. The perforators 58 are similarly mounted on a disc 56. A deflector 39, at the end of the guide 64, bends over the thread loops passed through the work so that they can be held between a belt 35 and one edge of the belt 31, thus keeping the lengths of thread inside the work under tension while they are being secured to the work by adhesive applied by a disc 29. According to the Provisional Specification the signatures may be fed to the stitching apparatus by narrow rollers within the saddle driven by a common belt engaging their peripheries ; the rollers may co-operate with grooved wheels above the work to grip the latter. They may be assisted past the gumming disc 29 by a member engaging one of the thread loops. Some classes of work may be fed flat, in which case the discs 4, 56 need not be of such section as to fit in the apex of a saddle. It may only be necessary to gum the ends of the thread in each signature.
