Abstract

638,027. Deep well pumps. SOBERG, A. S. June 18, 1947, No. 16082. Convention date, June 28, 1946. [Class 102(i)] A pumping apparatus particularly for deep wells comprises a casing 11 communicating with a supply of liquid, a cylinder 12 disposed adjacent the liquid and provided with an inlet check valve 16, a hollow bucket 18 adapted to reciprocate in the cylinder and having inlet and outlet bucket valves 21, 22, means associated with the bucket for neutralizing the static pressure of liquid in the casing, means for trapping a body of gas within the bucket and means communicating with the casing above the bucket capable of varying the static pressure of the liquid in the casing and thereby causing the bucket to reciprocate and produce a pumping action. The bucket is supported by a spring 24 and has an internal piston 38 slidable on a tube 23 for trapping the gas in its interior. The bucket is reciprocated on its down stroke by means of a piston 32 in a power cylinder 33 which applies pressure to the liquid column, and liquid below the bucket passes through valve 21 to force the piston 38 upwards and compress the gas until the pressure of the latter, plus the action of the spring 24, is sufficient to overcome the pressure of a spring 35 loading a delivery valve 37, whereupon further movement of the piston 32 will force liquid to be delivered. Upon the upstroke of the bucket effected by the spring 24 the compressed gas in the bucket moves the piston 38 outwards to discharge liquid from the interior through tube 23 and valve 22 into the liquid column. The latter may be primed through a pipe 29 whilst a bleeder valve 28 may be fitted to remove air. A strainer 13 is attached to the lower end of the cylinder and the valve 16 is fitted with a screwed nipple 17 adapted to be engaged by a probe for removal of the valve. In another embodiment the cylinder 12 may be made detachable from the casing and the piston 38 in the bucket may be dispensed with, the gas being replenished when necessary through a pipe leading from the top of the casing and communicating with the space below the bucket. In further embodiments the piston 38 may be replaced by a flexible diaphragm, a bladder or a metal bellows.
