Abstract

637,888. Flexible supports for bearings. BENDIX AVIATION CORPORATION. Nov. 13, 1947, No. 30194. Convention date, Dec. 6, 1946. [Class 12 (i)] [Also in Group XXIV] A flexible mounting for an anti-friction bearing comprises a band-like element of rubber or like material positioned in a cylindrical gap between one race member of the bearing and an associated member, the band telescopically fitting one of said members and having axiallyspaced ridges engaging the other of said members and also having at least one radial flange axially embracing one of the said members. As shown, a rubber band 106, Fig. 6, fits the outer bearing race ring 104 and has ridges 110 engaging a bearing housing 98 under compression. A flange 120 on the band 106 engages one face of the ring 104 and a second flange 144 engages the opposite face of the ring 104 and closes the bearing. Alternatively, a pair of flanges 120 may embrace the ends of the housing 98. In a modification, the band 106, Fig. 11, is located between the inner race ring 96 and the supporting shaft 152. One flange 120 engages one end of the race ring 96 and a second flange 120 engages a groove 156 in the ring 96. The second flange 120 may be replaced by a flange engaging the other end face of the ring 96. In another modification the band 106 telescopes over an enlarged shaft portion. The invention may be used between the motor and an epicyclic reduction gearing of an engine starter.
