Abstract

634,731. Wringers. BICKELL, S. F., SHAW, J., RIDDLE, R. T., and GARRARD, C. G. April 21, 1947, No. 10565. [Class 138 (ii)] In a wringing machine one roller is rotatably supported upon a fixed bearing and a second co-operating roller is rotatably supported upon a bearing carried by a resilient arm of metal or equivalent material which projects within the roller and is supported by a fulcrum on the machine frame, means being provided to move the arm about its fulcrum to vary the pressure between the rollers. As shown in Fig. 4, a frame member 55 supports a tube 56 to the outer end of which a roller bearing 65 is fixed. The outer race of this bearing is fixed to the foundation tube 58 of the lower roller 2 and also to a driving tube 60 which is mounted coaxially inside the tube 56 and has a driving handle 61 at its other end. The inner end of the foundation tube 58 is connected to the outer race of a roller bearing 57 which is housed in the frame. The end of the lower roller is closed by a dust cap 67 to which a sheet metal shelf 25, Figs 1 and 2 is attached. The upper roller 1 is supported on a resilient bar 68 which carries on a pivot 18 at its outer end a roller bearing 16 ; the outer cage of this bearing is welded to the foundation tube 21 of the roller 1 approximately at the centre and thus the upper roller can rock longitudinally about the bar 68. To resist transverse movement of the upper roller, a rubber tyre 42 is fixed to the projecting inner end of the foundation tube 21 so as to rub against vertical guiding surfaces on the frame 55 and a guard plate 76 prevents clothing fouling the tyre. The bar 68 is pivotally supported on the edge of a transverse aperture in the frame 55 and the shaft of a handle 54 screws into it and its lower end engages one end of a rocker 52, the other end of which has an upwardly-extending curved portion 69 engaged in a V-shaped groove in the resilient bar 68. An adjusting bolt 72 prevents undue slackness between the rocker and the bar. The rocker rests on a steel bearing plate 73 on the frame 55 and the end of the handle shaft 53 bears on a plug 75 which is held in the rocker by a pin 74 adapted to shear under excessive pressure. In a modification, the end of the resilient bar is curved downwardly to engage the surface of the rocker and the V-shaped groove is then omitted. In this construction the frame is in two parts held together by U-bolts. In the modification shown in Fig. 1, an elongated handle 28 is pivotally mounted in a frame 27 and passes through a slot 30 in the resilient bar 26, a screwed portion engaging a nut 31, the upper face of which is recessed to engage the bar 26 to prevent rotation. The rollers are mounted as described above. The modification shown in Fig. 2 is generally similar to that of Fig. 1, but the resilient bar 33 is stressed through a stud 34 engaging a lever 35 which is angularly offset with respect to the bar 33 and is pivoted in a groove 40 of a frame 41. The offset end of the lever 35 has a slot through which the screwed shaft of a handle 38 passes to engage a nut. Clockwise rotation of the handle raises the nut and thus the lever 35. The handle for driving the rollers may be shaped so as to fit inside the lower roller. The machine may be adapted for power drive. The Provisional Specification describes a construction in which the upper roller is mounted midway of its length on a rigid rod by means of a pivotally mounted bearing ; the frame is in two parts, as described in Specification 594,385, pivoted together, one part carrying the lower roller and the other the mounting rod for the upper roller ; the two rollers are urged together by a coil spring mounted between the two parts of the frame, the tension being adjustable by a handle. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 602,221.
