Abstract

631,973. Fluid flow meters. WEBB, R. H. Feb. 27, 1947, No. 5745. [Class 69 (i)] [Also in Group XXVII] To measure the flow of a fluid through a conduit 10, one or more wires 23, 24 forming arms of a Wheatstone bridge circuit are stretched across the conduit so that the variation in fluid flow alters the strain on the wire or wires and in consequence their electrical resistance. The strain may be either longitudinal or torsional as in the case when a disc is eccentrically supported by the wire. The wires may support a drag body 25 or a disc so that the strain in one wire increases whilst that in the other wire decreases. Another wire forming the third leg of the bridge circuit may circumferentially surround the pipe to make any corrections necessary should the conduit be physically deformed. The out-of-balance current in the bridge circuit may be used to control the fuel supply to an internal-combustion engine when the conduit forms the air intake to such an engine.
