Abstract

628,336. Endless-belt conveyers. HALFORD, T. F., and BAILLOT, A. G. Feb. 24, 1947, No. 5360. [Class 78 (i)] [Also in Group XXXV] Apparatus for conveying for example foundry sand comprises a conveyer 1 and several hoppers 5a, 5b, 5c, 5d, 5e each associated with means 9a-9e for discharging material from the conveyer into the hopper, and control means causing each discharging means to operate in sequence to discharge material into each hopper in turn. Further control means may be provided which, when the level of material in any hopper falls below a predetermined minimum, causes the corresponding discharge means only to be operated and which, when the level in any hopper exceeds a predetermined maximum, prevents delivery to this hopper. The endless belt conveyer 1 conveys sand from a source 6 past ploughs 9a, 9b, 9c, 9d, 9e which divert the sand into the hoppers but may be raised when electromagnets 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, 12e are operated, surplus sand passing to a receiver 7 whence it is returned to the source 6. Two probes, comprising stainless steel rods mounted in insulators of glazed ceramic material at the upper end of each hopper, project vertically down into the hopper to different extents. The body of the hopper is earthed so that when the material reaches the level of a probe it is earthed to change the mode of operation of a relay system (see Group XXXV) controlling the sequential operation of the electromagnets 12a, 12b, 12c, 12d, 12e. The probes are arranged to vary the bias on the grid of a thermionic valve, the bias being changed more when the material reaches the level of the upper probe than when it reaches the lower probe. In the anode circuit of the valve are two relays, one more sensitive than the other so that one is operated when the material reaches the lower probe and the other when the material reaches the upper probe. These relays after the mode of operation of a series of relays including one corresponding to each plough, the latter relays being operated sequentially by means including an automatically periodically operated twoway switch, the relays locking when operated until released by an automatically operating interrupter switch. The time for which each electromagnet is caused to lower the corresponding plough is determined by a corresponding electric time-delay device.
