Abstract
Organo-silicon polymers containing -CH2 SiR2- units are obtained by contacting a compound of the type XCH2.SiR2Y with an alkali metal or alkali metal amide in the presence of a compound of the type R2SiY2. In the formul , X is a halogen, preferably chlorine or bromine; Y is a halogen, preferably chlorine or bromine, or an alkoxy radical, preferably chlorine or bromine, or an alkoxy radical, preferably ethoxy; and the R's are the same or different and are alkyl, e.g. methyl to octadecyl, or monocyclic aryl, e.g. phenyl or tolyl. Sodium, sodium-potassium eutectic, and sodium amide are specified. The products may be used as water-proofing agents and foam-preventing agents. In examples: (1) a mixture of dimethyl ethoxy chlorsilane and dimethyl chloromethyl ethoxysilane was added to a refluxing mixture of toluene and liquid sodium and the product separated by distillation into C2H5OSi(CH3)2.CH2.Si (CH3)2OC2H5, C2H5OSi (CH3)2.[CH2.Si(CH3)2]2OC2\t H5, and higher analogues thereof; similar results were obtained from mixtures of (2) dimethyl diethoxysilane and dimethyl chloromethyl ethoxysilane; (3) dimethyl diethoxysilane and dimethyl chloromethyl chlorsilane; (4) dimethyl dichlorsilane and dimethyl chloromethyl ethoxysilane; and (5) dimethyl chloromethyl chlorsilane, methyl buty dichlorsilane, methyl phenyl chloromethyl chlorsilane and methyl octadecyl dichlorsilane.ALSO:Organo-silicon polymers containing -CH2 SiR2- units are obtained by contacting a compound of the type XCH2.SiR2Y with an alkali metal or alkali metal amide in the presence of a compound of the type R2SiY2. In examples: (1) a mixture of dimethyl ethoxychlorsilane and dimethyl chloromethyl ethoxysilane was added to a refluxing mixture of toluene and liquid sodium and the product separated by distillation into <FORM:0624551/IV (b)/1> C2H5OSi <FORM:0624551/IV (b)/2> , and higher analogues thereof; similar results were obtained from mixtures of (2) dimethyl diethoxysilane and dimethyl chloromethyl ethoxysilane; (3) dimethyl diethoxysilane and dimethyl chloromethyl chlorsilane; (4) dimethyl dichlorsilane and dimethyl chloromethyl ethoxysilane; and (5) dimethyl chloromethyl chlorsilane, methyl butyl dichlorsilane, methyl phenyl chloromethyl chlorsilane, and methyl octadecyl dichlorsilane.
