Abstract

621,499. Transmitting mechanical power. CARTER CARBURETOR CORPORATION. March 12, 1946, No. 7651. Convention date, Oct. 3, 1945. [Class 38 (iv)] [Also in Group XXVII] Starting control apparatus for internalcombustion engines (see also Group XXVII) comprises an induction conduit with a choke valve for controlling the admission of air thereto, thermo-sensitive means for urging the valve towards closed position when the temperature is low, operator-controlled starting means for the engine, a device for locking the valve independently of the thermosensitive means and a mechanical connection between the starting means and the device for positively locking the valve responsive to movement of the starting means to engine starting position. As shown (Fig. 1), an extension 46 of a starter switch 12, operates a member 45 which mechanically locks the choke valve when the switch is closed. The switch controls the supply of current to a starting motor 9. The member 45 is connected by a Bowden cable 43 to a locking member 42, (Fig. 3). The locking member engages a toothed sector fixed to the shaft of the choke valve 15, the toothed sector being integral with an arm 32 on the shaft. The end of a bimetallic thermosensitive strip 28 is hooked round the end 31 of the arm 32. In modifications of this arrangement, (a) the starter switch may close the circuit of a solenoid which closes a switch in the starter motor circuit and also operates the locking member; (b) the locking member is operated by means of a collar on the starter motor shaft, which collar moves with the starter pinion towards the engine flywheel when the starter motor is energized. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also a modification in which a foot pedal first moves a yoke to move the starter pinion against the flywheel teeth and then closes a switch in the circuit of the starter motor. The final movement of the pedal actuates the choke locking member. Fig. 7 (Cancelled) shows a modification in which an electromagnet 74 acts as a brake to hold the choke valve by co-operation with a plate 72 of magnetic material mounted on a flange 69 of an extension of the choke shaft 65. The electromagnet is in circuit with the solenoid which operates the switch of starter motor circuit and is energized when the starter button is depressed. The flange is formed at the opposite side of the choke valve shaft to a thermosensitive element 79. In another arrangement a solenoid in circuit with the starter motor solenoid-operated switch may.actuate a locking member for the choke valve. This subjectmatter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
