Abstract

619,386. Discharge apparatus. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., HARRIS, N. L., and RYDE, J. W. Dec. 5, 1946, No. 36084. [Class 39 (i)] In a discharge lamp or lightning arrester containing water vapour, one or more electrodes, operating at least periodically as cathodes to one or more further electrodes operating as anodes, are provided in manufacture with an oxide surface which is reduced by the discharge during normal operation; this compensates for the oxidation of the further electrode or electrodes that normally takes place at the expense of the oxygen component of the water vapour filling, so that the amount of the latter remains substantially constant throughout the life of the discharge device. In a modification, if the device works on A.C., all the electrodes may have an oxide surface. The electrode may be of copper with a surface of cupric oxide, or of tungsten coated with lead peroxide applied with a nitrocellulose binder. The device contains gas and/or vapour in addition to the water vapour present, e.g. a mixture of rare gas and water vapour.
