Abstract
618,944. Weaving knotted pile fabrics; beat-up motions; reeds. PICKING, W. T. Oct. 14, 1944, No. 19890. [Classes 142(ii), 142(iii) and 142(iv)] Pile fabrics having Persian knots are woven in a loom, Fig. 3, including a main slay 19 and an auxiliary slay 23 (both opentopped), fixed and moving combs 48, 49. and a reed 39 having flexible dents, Fig. 2. At the beginning of a cycle, Fig. 3, the auxiliary slay 23 beats up the weft 47 (its dents entering the comb 48) and, on encountering the previously inserted pile knots, is given an upward movement to tighten the knots (the front of the dents being serrated for this purpose); the comb 49 has moved out of the way just before the auxiliary slay reaches the fell. Tubes. grippers, or needles introduce pile yarns between pairs of warp yarns, after which the auxiliary slay moves out of the warp and the tubes &c. move the pile yarns forward to the fell. The warp yarns 16, 17 are then lifted out of the main slay 19, the reed 39 is shogged to move them laterally, and the yarns 16 are lowered into dents next to those they occupied originally; the reed is then shogged back two dents of the main slay beyond its original position and the yarns 17 are lowered into the slay, Fig. 9. The main slay then moves forward to the fell, thus crossing each warp yarn 16 with the yarn 17 of an adjacent pair and pressing them round the pile yarns, Fig. 11. The comb 49 then moves rearwardly and upwardly through the comb 48 to tuck the lower ends 51 of the pile yarns through the warp behind the crossings, Fig. 11. When the main slay recedes, the pile yarns (if inserted by tubes or needles) are cut and the auxiliary slay 23 returns to the position shown in Fig. 3. The warp is then lifted out of the main slay 19, whereupon the yarns 16, 17 uncross. thereby transforming the loops of pile yarn into Persion knots, Fig. 18. For the next cycle, the warp yarns 16 and 17 exchange roles, the yarns 16 being lowered for the insertion of weft. Beat-up mottoes.-The auxiliary slay 23 is actuated by a cam 33 which oscillates it about a point 28 on an arm 29, and by a cam 35 which raises and lowers the arm 29 to move the slay into and out of the warp and give it a sharp upward movement to tighten the knob. Reeds.-The reed wires 40 may each comprise a pair of thin flexible strips.
