Abstract
613,251. Mirrors. VERHOEK, F. H., and MORGAN, W. L. June 13, 1946, No. 17712. Convention date, Feb. 6. [Class 97 (i)] [Also in Group XV] Mirrors are made by coating one surface of a sheet of e.g. glass, plastic or metal with a gelatinous coating consisting of a gelatinous water-insoluble inorganic metallic compound and water forming a stiff gel, the coating being insoluble in alkaline mirroring solution. The gel may then be removed by the application of a stream of water or by rubbing under water. Specified metallic compounds are silicic and titanic acids,'ferrous and ferric hydroxides, the hydroxides of copper, antimony, nickel, cobalt, cadmium and bismuth, copper, and iron silicates. copper, iron and zinc ferrocyanides or sulphides, iron and barium or phosphates, cadmium and barium pyrophosphates, silver and copper borates, and iron and copper tungstates. The gel may be formed by the interaction of two aqueous solutions. The gelatinous coating may be applied from a roller R dipping into the solution C and producing coating 13, Fig. 2. The other surface may then be sprayed with mirroring solution 15, Fig. 6, or this solution M may be poured on, Fig. 7. A continuous process, Fig. 10, has a belt 13 coated with gel from container 29 by rollers 26 and 27 carrying sheets placed on the felt near 22 sprayed with mirroring solution from spray 30 and removed near 21. A water spray 33 cleans the belt and surplus material is removed by squeeze rolls 34.
