Abstract

612,242. Supply systems for resistance welding; condenser arrangements. STANDARD TELEPHONES & CABLES, Ltd., and ASHFORD, J. L. May 21, 1946, No. 15354. [Class 38 (iv)] In a control system for a capacity discharge welder, electromagnetic relays or switches control the charging and discharging of the condenser in such a manner that (1) the condenser is automatically charged between discharges, (2)'successive discharges pass through the primary winding of the welding transformer in opposite directions and (3) the relays or switches do not consume current between welds. As shown in Fig. 1, the system comprises a latch-in relay having operation and release coils DA, DB, respectively, a doublewound relay C and contactors A, B for reversing the connection of the condenser CN to the welding transformer X, Y. With the relays and contactors de-energized, their contacts are in the positions shown, so that the condenser is charged over contacts A1, B1. Closure of the weld-initiating switch FS energizes contactor A and discharges the condenser over contacts A2, A3, whilst disconnecting it from the charging source at A1. Release of FS de-energizes A, disconnecting the transformer and re-establishing the charging circuit, the charging current flowing through DA which picks up, latches in, closes contacts DA2, DA3 and opens contacts DA1. Closure of FS to initiate another weld now energizes contactor B so that the condenser discharges through the transformer in the reverse direction. Relay C is also energized and holds in over contacts C3, DA3, its contacts C1, C2 changing over so that when FS is opened the condenser charging current flows through the coil DB to release the DA contacts. Relay C holds in over contacts DB until the charging current has fallen to a low value, when DB and C will release. Opening of FS has also de-energized contactor B, so that the operating cycle is complete. In a modified arrangement the latch-in relay directly operates the reversing contacts for the transformer, the contactors A, B being replaced by a single relay controlled by the initiating switch and having change-over contacts for connecting the condenser to the charging and discharging circuits.
