Abstract
609,314. Tanks. BROADSMITH, N. E., BURGESS, D. G., GORDON, J. E., McMULLEN, P. L., PHILLIPS, L. N., QUINT, B. S. C., and WHITCUT, H. M. Sept. 24, 1945, No. 24755. [Class 69 (i)] [Also in Groups VIII, XVII and XXXIII] Tanks for the storage and transport of liquids, such as aircraft fuel tanks, comprise an envelope enclosing a fibrous filling of honeycomb structure, communication being provided between adjacent tubular elements of the honeycomb. The filling may be produced by coating sheets of paper &c. with spaced parallel strips of adhesive, stacking the sheets with the adhesive strips in adjacent sheets staggered, and drawing out the sheets to honeycomb form when the adhesive has set. The sheets may be initially perforated to provide intercommunication between tubular elements, and before or after formation of the honeycomb, the material is impregnated with a liquid-proofing agent such as a synthetic resin condensation product. Communication may be provided between all the tubular elements or the filling may be in sections of elements, such sections being sealed from one another. Each section. may have a separate outlet and inlet, or a common inlet may be provided, transfer ports being provided between the upper ends of adjacent tubes in adjacent sections. The envelope may be of metal, laminated fibrous material, &c., and may have a self-sealing outer layer. As shown, a tank within an aerofoil comprises a skin 1 of cured, resinated asbestos &c., and a honeycomb structure in two sections A, B, tubular elements of a section communicating by ports 3 at their lower ends and all the elements having ports 4 at their upper ends. Outlet pipes 5, 6 with perforated ends lead from the sections. Specification 609,313, [Group XXXIII], is referred to.
