Abstract

605,000. Glass threads. VERSIL, Ltd., and LAYCOCK, W. H. Dec. 11, 1945, No. 33500. [Class 56] Glass threads from fusion points are drawn and wound on a rotating drum which is enclosed in a casing which also shields the fusion points and the glass threads as they pass to the drum from external air disturbances. As shown, a glass rod A is melted at 6 and drawn into a thread 7 and wound by a drum 8 which rotates about the point 9 with a circumferential speed in excess of 1500 metres per minute. Casing 14, 15 and removable part 16 shield the fusion point and the thread, while casing 10, 11, 12, 13 encloses the drum. An adjustable flap 17 and exit B regulate the flow of an air cushion within the case. A comb device 20, which may shuttle, aligns the thread, and with the air cushion guides the thread on to the drum without damage.
