Abstract

A slab of aluminium alloyed with copper 4.2 per cent, manganese 0.6 per cent, and magnesium 1.5 per cent having a relatively high yield strength, a Brinell hardness of 42 and a marked resistance to fatigue but not possessing substantial resistance to abrasion in handling is bonded to a slab comprising aluminium alloyed with silicon 0.7 per cent, magnesium 1.25 per cent, and chromium 0.25 per cent, which alloy has a Brinell hardness of 40, and is resistant to abrasion. Between the basic slab and each associated slab is placed a layer of commercially pure aluminium 0.020 inches thick and containing less than 1 per cent silicon. The assembly is heated and rolled down to the desired thickness, this working serving to bond the layers into an integral sheet.
