Abstract

598,811. Vibration-dampers. STONE, L. J. Sept. 11, 1945, No. 23419. [Class 108 (iii)] The diameters of the rollers 23, 24 and associated circular tracks 22, 21 of a vibration-damper of the kind employing a non-parallel bifilar suspension of the roller type are determined from a prescribed formula, which, for small amplitudes of oscillation, is stated to ensure that the vibration of the damper is accommodated without slipping occuring between the contacting surfaces of the rollers and the tracks. The oscillating piece 20 is arranged with its depending limbs disposed on opposite sides of the carrier 19 and provided with two circular tracks 21, each of which is engaged by a roller 24. The intermediate portions of these rollers are of different diameters from the end portions 24 and constitute the rollers 23 engaging the circular tracks 22 in the carrier 19. Assuming that the two circular tracks 21 are spaced apart by a distance 2a, and the corresponding tracks 22 in the carrier are spaced apart to the extent necessary to give the necessary inclination of the suspension indicated by the angle a, the formular from which the diameters of the rollers and tracks are determined is I - d1 d4/d2 d3 =L sin a/a ,where d1 and d2 are the diameter of the tracks 22, 21, d3 and d4 are the diameters of the corresponding rollers 23, 24, and L=¢ (d1+d2-d3-d4) where, instead of the links converging downwardly, the spacing of the tracks is such as to produce a system in which the links converge upwardly at an angle #, the formula is d1 d4 /d2 d3 I = L sin #/a If desired, the roller tracks 21, 22 may be identical, or the rollers may be of the same diameter throughout.
