Abstract

598,473. Golf clubs. STONE, W. R. Dec. 28, 1944, Nos. 26014 and 26015. Convention dates, Dec. 28, 1943, and Sept. 16, 1944. [Class 132 (ii)] A golf club has a metal blade forming the whole face of the clubhead and a body of shockabsorbing material secured to the back of the blade, the whole forming a clubhead having approximately the dimensions of a normal wood club. The shock-absorbing body may be of plastic material secured to the blade 2 by being moulded around knobs 4 on the blade or (Fig. 5) by fitting into a tapered socket formed by a flange 8 which joins the sole 9. In both cases the sole 9 may be thickened to adjust the weight of the clubhead and extended rearwardly to provide a sole flange 6 or 11. This thickened flange is preferably shorter than the blade to allow the plastic material to be moulded round it. The flange 8 may be extended rearwardly 12, a coloured spot 13 may be inserted and the face may have two oblique lines bounding a central scored area. Clubs of different loft are constructed, those of greater loft having a greater weight of metal and less of shock-absorbing material. A method of securing the shaft to a blade having a body of moulded plastic material is described, Fig. 8 (not shown), in which the shaft extends into the body through a hollow shank and a pin passing transversely through the end of the shaft is embedded in the body..
