Abstract
596,814. Bubble pipes. NEUMANN, A. E. June 22, 1945, No. 15994. Convention date, Aug. 23, 1944. [Class 132 (iii)] A bubble pipe comprises essentially a compartment closed at its upper end having an outlet at its lower end adapted to receive bubble forming solution together with a stem opening into the said compartment and a baffle within the said compartment spaced from the top and bottom thereof and extending from the lower wall of said stem substantially perpendicularly to the axis of the said opening or outlet in order to shield the said outlet from a current of air entering the compartment from the stem. In a modification the stem is provided with a second passage opening into a second compartment having restricted communication with the atmosphere and adapted to contain a second liquid, the said second passage being adapted to form a whistle. In the Figure the bowl 6 is constructed with two separate compartments, the upper one 8 containing, say, water and having restricted communication 11 with the atmosphere, and the lower one 9 having the outlet 14 adapted to receive the bubble-forming solution. The outlet is provided with an annular lip 13 with a rounded edge, the two compartments being separated by a partition 7. The tubular stem 16 is divided into two parts by a partition 19, which preferably joins the chamber partition 7. The upper tube 17 forms a whistle, the lower part 18 communicates with the chamber 9 in which is a baffle 20. The upper surface of the stem projects into the upper chamber 8 so as almost to touch the partition 7. Water is poured into 8 so as to submerge completely the opening of the tube. The lower part is dipped into the bubble-forming liquid and on blowing down the mouthpiece a bubble forms on the outlet 14 while the whistle emits a pleasant burbling or trilling sound, the pitch of which can be varied by pressure on one or both of the flexible mouthpiece portions 21 and 23.
