Abstract
596,628. Butt stocks for rifles. JOHNSON, M. M. July 31, 1945, No. 19603. Convention date, Aug. 4, 1944. [Class 119] A tubular member 8 extending from the receiver 2 of a rifle carries a depending latch abutment 33 at its rear end, and to the upper rear end part of the member 8 is pivoted a cap-like butt plate 10 carrying a latch 55 which engages with the abutment to lock the butt plate in its operation position. In the construction shown, the member 8 fits round a tube 20 extending from the receiver and housing the main spring 23 of the rifle, and from the receiver extends a second tubular member 9 intended to hold cleaning appliances. A plate 30 fits over the rear end of tube 20, which is closed by a plug 22, and over a coupling 25 threaded into the member 9, this plate being formed with the latch abutment 33 and with a lug 32 for the hinge pin 48 of the butt plate 10. The butt plate consists of a cap 45 and a part 46 connected by rivets 50, 51, and a further rivet 52 in the cap engages the abutment 33 to limit the movement of the butt plate. Within the butt plate is a spring-controlled latch which is urged by a spring 58 to a position behind the abutment 33, as shown, to lock the butt plate in position, the rivet 50 serving as a guide for the latch and the rivet 51 as an abutment for the lever end of the spring.
