Abstract

595,490. Aircraft structures. WALLIS, B. N. July, 11, 1945, No. 17710. [Class 4] An aeroplane in which lateral control is effected by relative rotary adjustment of the port and starboard wing sections about their spanwise axes and pitch control is attained by a similar rotary movement of the entire wing, has the wing sections connected at their inboard ends by a system of stiff links which provides flexural continuity of the entire wing as an integral structure, and a spigot or equivalent connection resisting shear forces. As shown, the wing sections 10, 11 are connected by a universal spigot joint 13, 14, permitting relative rotation about the spanwise axes and also relative axial movement, and by a series of links 16 anchored at their ends by spherical joints 15 disposed on parabolic arcs which are convex relatively to the plane of symmetry of the aircraft. Means for mounting and adjusting the wing sections may be of the kind described in Specification 595,494.
