[Class 146 (ii)] [Also in Group XVIII] A map-holder for use on a vehicle comprises a casing with a window for displaying a map extending between two winding spools, and has means such as spring clips provided in the casing for receiving spools carrying additional maps in a non-display position and lamps arranged at one or more sides of the front of the casing for illuminating the map. A boxlike casing, having spring clips 26 in the back part 2 to receive spare maps on spools 27, has in the front part 1 a window 5 of glass or non- inflammable transparent celluloid behind which the map 14 is stretched on spools 8 having a slot 8<1> to receive the end of the map and which may be turned mechanically from the transmission shaft or manually by means of knobs 10 released by pulling out the knob a short distance against the action of a spring. The map is illuminated in the dark by strip lamps 18 arranged in recesses at the side of the casing, so that the driver is shielded from direct glare, and which may be operated from the electrical system of the vehicle. Pointers 15 are arranged to slide in guides at the sides of the casing and can be secured in any position by nuts. A magnifying glass may be mounted, preferably adjustably for focus, in front of the window 5 so that the whole or a substantial part of the map is magnified. Means may be provided for mounting the casing and, as shown, spring clips 23 and 24 are arranged at right angles to each other to clip on to the rim and a spoke respectively of the steering wheel of a car. The casing may be mounted on an arm hinged to part of the car, as above the windscreen, so that the holder can be moved easily into and out of the driver's field of vision. A smaller casing is described, which may be used on a motor cycle and which is in one part, the spare spools being mounted between the two spools carrying the map in use.
