Abstract

590,273. Loading appliances for ordnance. BURNEY, SIR C. D. Oct. 4, 1943, No. 16262. [Classes 92 (i) and 92 (ii)] Relates to non-recoil guns having rearwardly discharging gas nozzles as described in Specification 586,749, and adapted for automatic loading through the space between the nozzles as described in Specifications 590,272 and 594,577. According to the present invention, ammunition of the fixed type is loaded through the space between a pair of the nozzles 3 by an ammunition carrier 26 rotatable on one of the nozzles and is transferred to the breech by a moving breech block 10 reciprocated by gas or recoil action aided by a return spring. In the form shown, a forked gas piston rod 11 has pin and groove connection with rearwardly pivoted arms 15 which operate through depending rods 16, Fig. 9, pawls 23 and ratchet teeth 64 to rotate the carrier step by step. One pawl acts for a half-step during rearward movement of the rod 11 and the other during forward movement thereof. The breech screw 10, Fig. 5, of the interrupted thread type is formed in two spring- connected parts and is attached to the rod 11. After ramming, the spring play is taken up to rotate the screw for locking and to effect firing by a pin 50. To prevent double loading a spring pin 67, Fig. 11, engages the cartridge case, the pin being connected to a detent 68 which engages a notch 69 in the rod 11 to prevent loading movement until after ejection of the case by the lever 65 shown in Fig. 10. Catches released by a press-button 25 permit removal of the container for recharging or the container may be of sprocket form fed by an ammunition belt of chain form.
