Abstract
585,825. Making leaf springs. OMES, Ltd., and MORA, G. May 5, 1944, No. 8575. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] Leaf springs with end lugs for shackle pins are formed by upsetting bar stock to form a head, forging the head in dies to lug shape, supporting the forged end in a corresponding die in the upsetting machine, forging the second end to shape, bending to shape if a curved spring be desired, drilling the lugs for the pins, and finally tempering. Forging-machines.-The ends of the flat bar 33, Fig. 2, are tapered to avoid lateral spread during upsetting, and the bar is supported by a fluid-pressure ram 36 and a steady 37 and is heated and upset between electrode jaws 27, 29 and an electrode anvil 23 hollowed at 43 to suit the head 44 to be formed. The jaw 29 has a liner 31, Fig. 6, cut away at 35 so that contact takes place in the centre of the bar and the jaw 27 has a liner 30 cut away at 34 to ensure contact at the sides of the bar. Even distribution of the heating current is thus obtained, resulting in uniform heating of the bar. The bar is seated in a recess 39, Fig. 7, in the steady and is held by a pivoted top member 40 that swings under a hook 42. When upsetting the second end of the bar, the anvil 36 is fitted with a die 45, Fig. 9, shaped to fit the forged end 48 and prevent binding. A retaining member 49 is pivoted at 50 to a swivelling pin 52 and is swung under a hook 53. Specification 585,822 is referred to.
