[Class 64 (iii)] A heat-exchanger comprises a series of heat transfer plates 13 bolted between headers 11 and 12 each plate having a plurality of sinuous grooves on each face, 33, 34 respectively, generally at right angles to those on the other face. The plates are arranged, Fig. 6, so that corresponding grooves face each other to form sinuous channels between the plates, each pair of grooves being connected at each end to a duct formed by parts 35-42 in the plates. For example, fluid entering a pipe connection 20 flows through ducts 18 and 19 which become 39 and 40 from which it can pass via the channels 34 into the ducts 41 and 42 which become ducts 25 and 24 in the header 12 and so out via the pipe connection 32. An identical arrangement holds for the second fluid. The plates and headers may be held together by welding, cementing, soldering, brazing, or vulcanizing, and each pair of plates can have a fluid-tight gasket 45 between them. A distributing block may be arranged between the plates and intermediate the headers to enable the device to be used with three fluids, whilst the plates may be elliptical, circular or any other convenient shape. The grooves on opposite faces of the same plate may be inclined to each other at an angle other than a right angle, and they can be straight instead of sinuous.
