Abstract

584,578. Locking rods. TRIST & CO., Ltd., R., and THOMAS, H. B. Jan. 4, 1945, No. 412. [Class 80 (iii)] [Also in Group XXIX] A uni - directional locking device for an axially moving rod 1, such as a valve rod, comprises a collar 2 with a conical surface 3 on the rod which moves within a fixed sleeve 4 having holes 5 for the reception of balls 6. Surrounding the rod and sleeve is an outer ring or sleeve 7 freely moving under gravity to engage the balls with an inner conical surface. The rod 1 can be moved downwards from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that in Fig. 2, but upward movement is prevented by the conical surface 3 forcing the balls 6 outward into locking engagement with the ring 7. For operation in the reverse direction the conical surface 3 is provided on the lower side of collar 2. For an horizontal arrangement a spring is used to replace the force of gravity on the ring 7. By providing the balls with a certain amount of axial movement in the holes 5 of sleeve 4 the collar 2 on the rod 1 can be dispensed with.
