Abstract

584,129. Expansion joints. ARNOLD, J. C. (Standard Oil Development Co.). Jan. 24, 1944, No. 1337. [Class 99 (i)] A pipe system includes a flexible expansion joint wherein a central corrugated expansible section 34 is connected by flanges 32, 38 to pipe sections, one of which may be an elbow 10, a pair of external parallel tension members 53, 62 being mounted on common pivots whose axes intersect the pipe axes and which are rigidly secured to the respective pipe sections. The section 10 may be anchored at 12 to a supporting structure. In Fig. 1 the hot and cold positions of the joint are shown in full and dotted lines respectively. The expansible section comprises a number of corrugated elements 74, separated by metal sleeves 76 attached thereto, and to prevent fluid in the piping from entering the corrugations each element 74 is fitted with an internal sleeve 78 with end ribs 82, 84, fixed abutments 86, 88 being provided to prevent displacement of the sleeves. Inert gas such as steam may be bled into each section 74 through lines 98. The linkage 53, 62 absorbs stresses produced by temperature changes, internal fluid pressure in the pipe &c. In some cases the links may be pivoted on the end portions 77 of the expansible section or on the flanges 32, 38.
