Abstract

578,520. Purifying water and other liquids. TATE & LYLE, Ltd., and SIMMONS, C. E. G. Sept. 6 1943, No. 14555. [Class 46] [Also in Group VI] . For the treatment of liquors with solid adsorbents such as the treatment of sugar solution with bone char or with anion or cationremoval synthetic resins, the liquor is caused to flow in counter current to the adsorbent and to recover retained portions of the liquor the spent adsorbent is treated with washing liquid, also in counter current, which passes to and mixes with the liquor to be treated. Thus adsorbent fed by a pipe 11 passes downwardly in a limb 3 of a U-tube 1 in which limb is rising a sugar solution supplied to the base of the U-tube by a pipe 6. An impeller 12 feeds the adsorbent forward to rise in the other limb 7 of the U-tube where it is washed free of remaining sugar solution by water supplied from a pipe 8, the washings passing downwardly to join the main stream of sugar solution; the spent and washed adsorbent is drawn off by a pipe 13 for regeneration while the clarified sugar solution passes through a flaring enlargement 2 to a collector 4 with outlet 5. The regeneration and the rinsing of the adsorbent free from excess regenerant may be effected in a similar apparatus. Sulphonated coal or metaphenylene diamine resins may be used as the adsorbent resin. The Provisional Specification describes a form of U-tube comprising an inner tapering 'tubular member located within an outer chamber so that the concentric passageways form, in effect, the limbs of the U.
