Abstract

571,378. Percussive tools. MOSS, E. W. (Ingersoll-Rand Co.). Dec. 8, 1943, No. 20553. [Class 124] [Also in Group XXII] In a fluid - actuatec riveting machine a single valve controls the move ment of the power unit on its supporting frame to apply pressure to the work and then the supply to the power unit tc close the rivet, the valve being automatic ally closed when the riveting is complete. The casing 22 has bolted to it at 24 a yoke 23 supporting the self-contained abutment 26. The percussive power unit 30 of known type is slidable in the casing under pressure applied first to the end 48 of an extension 47 and then to the end 49 of the unit, a packing ring 42 being provided. A spring 43 returns the parts. The snap holder 34 is retained in the unit, by a spring 36 engaging a shoulder 38, in position to receive the impact of a hammer piston 32. Air supplied at 58 passes by a port 59 to the valve chamber containing a poppet valve 50 held on its seat by a spring 56. The end 74 of the valve projects for actuation by the arm 73 on a rocking and sliding rod 69 having a control lever 76. Rocking is opposed by a spring 82 and sliding by a spring 75. The first stage of the opening movement of the valve closes an exhaust port 60<1> and admits pressure via the groove 60 to a port 61 leading to the end 48. Further movement of the valve cuts off the port 66 from a groove 67 leading to exhaust at 68 and connects it to a pressure supply groove 65 supplied through the ports 64 from the interior of the valve which is fed through ports 63. The port 66 supplies pressure to the end 49 of the casing and also via ports 40 to the percussive mechanism. The gradual advance of the unit 30 in the casing during the closing of the rivet causes it to engage the bent-in end 78 of the rod 69 sliding it to release the arm 73 laterally from the end 74 of the valve when the spring 56 closes it and stops the machine.
