[Class 3S (iv)] [Also in Group XXXVII] Any desired degree of compensation of the ohmic. drop in a motor armature 10, is obtained by means of a variable source of voltage, for example, a booster generator 14, in the armature circuit, which is controlled in accordance with the difference between a voltage from a. potentiometer 19 across the booster terminals and a voltage across a device, such as the motor series field 10b in the armature circuit. To obtain rapid response to changes in the ohmic drop, as when accelerating winding reel and mill stand motors, the booster is excited by an armature-reaction-excited machine 17, the control winding 17c of which is in a circuit comprising the opposed voltages. Hunting is checked by an auxiliary control winding 17e, transformer-coupled to the exciter armature.
