Abstract

566,713. Making bellows ; soldering. MILLER & CO., Ltd., H., and SMITH, W. R. July 27, 1943, No. 12177. [Classes 83 (ii) and 83 (iv)] An exhausted hollow article is made by forming a hollow body 12, Fig. 4, with at least one opening, closing this by a cap 11 with fusible material between the cap and body, placing the whole in a chamber which is then exhausted, and then fusing said material. In making metal bellows or capsules for use in pressure recorders &c., the bellows 12 with two open ends closed by caps 11, 11a, having solder applied to their contacting faces, is placed between two heating coils 8. These are supported by the pillars 2 of a jig having seats 4, 15 between which the bellows &c. are clamped by a nut 10. The coils 8 are each arranged between insulating washers 13, 14 and each has one end connected to a terminal pin 7 and the other to a bracket 5 sliding on the pillars 2. A number of loaded jigs is placed in a chamber provided with electrical bus-bars or couplings for receiving the pins 7. The chamber is exhausted, the current turned on long enough to melt the solder, and, when the solder has set, the vacuum is broken and the chamber opened. The current may be turned on and off automatically and the temperature may be increased in stages. If the hollow body is not compressible, a spring may be included.
