Abstract

A liver preparation for the treatment of an mias is obtained by digesting mammalian liver with papain at a pH value of 5.5 at 60 DEG C. for three hours, and then rapidly raising the temperature to 100 DEG C. and boiling, say, for five minutes, to destroy the activity of the enzyme without destruction of the active principles of the liver. The product may be filtered and concentrated to half its volume, again filtered through sterile kieselguhr, the filtrate &c. passed through a Seitz filter, and a solid product be obtained from the final filtrate by spray drying or removal of water at a low temperature under reduced pressure. According to the Provisional Specification, other enzymes such as pepsin, trypsin, or bromelin may be used in the process, and their destruction effected by means other than heat; and the digestion may take place at a pH value of 5-5.5.
