Abstract

565,634. Controlling aircraft. MILES AIRCRAFT, Ltd. [formerly PHILLIPS & POWIS AIRCRAFT, Ltd.], and MILES, G. H. Feb. 15, 1943, No. 2497. [Class 4] The outer extremity of an aircraft wing or other aerofoil is distortable so that it may act as an aileron, for instance, and it may also be extensible and retractable with respect to the main part of the aerofoil. Fig. 3 shows a main wing provided with a distortable and retractable extension comprising ribs 3, 10, 11, the rib 10 being secured to a tubular member 5 rotatable in bearings 6, 7 on the main wing part to effect the distortion, by a lever 8 with which the member 5 has splined engagement at 15. The member 5 is also axially slidable in the bearings and extension and retraction of the extension is effected pneumatically by a bellows device formed by reinforced sheet rubber 16 secured to the rib 3 of the extension and to the end rib 4 of the main wing part. The bellows is supplied and exhausted by pipes 18 and it is protected when collapsed by an overlapping part 17 of the main wing. A construction is also shown in which the wing extension is only distortable. The ribs 3, 10 are covered by a skin of sealing and slightly elastic material, such as used for the bellows, the extension being inflated to the required air pressure to maintain the shape. The tip 14 may also be inflated. A flap 15 may be provided.
