Abstract
562,525. Printing machines. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO., Ltd. March 22, 1943, No. 4649. Convention date, April 21, 1942. [Class 100 (ii)] Apparatus for conditioning ink on the inking mechanism of a printing press comprises means for applying a liquid spray to the mechanism, means for actuating the spray-applying means automatically when the press is operating at a certain speed, and means for maintaining the spray for a period of time following a change in the speed of the press. As shown, a number of spraying nozzles 30 are arranged along and adjacent to the distributing rollers contacting the ink distributing drum of the inking mechanism. Compressed air is supplied to the nozzles from a pipe 31 and draws the liquid to be sprayed through needle valves 42 connected to a liquid supply pipe 41 through which the liquid is forced from a reservoir 37 by air admitted thereto by a pipe 38 from the pipe 31. A valve 45 controlling the operation of the nozzles is actuated by a solenoid 46 which is energized when the press is operating at a slow speed by the closing of a switch 47 by contact therewith of the switch arm 49 of the press speed control switch 48. The closure of the switch 47 actuates a relay 56 to close a switch 60 which thereupon closes a circuit of a second relay 63 which closes the circuit of the solenoid 46. The relay 56 is of the quick make and slow break type so that after a change of speed of the press by moving the switch arm 49 which allows the switch 47 to open, the spray is maintained for a period of time until the relay 56 opens the switch 60. A push-button switch 70 enables the operator to actuate the valve at any time independently of the switch 47. The liquid sprayed may be water, or a hygroscopic liquid such as glycerine or diethylene glycol in water, in the case of water base inks, or kerosine in the case of petroleum oil base inks, the action of the liquid being to prevent caking of the inks on the inking mechanism or other parts of the press.
