Abstract
561,395. Stud fastenings. JARRETT, F. Aug. 13, 1942, Nos. 11337 and 14392. [Class 44] In a stud fastening for aircraft cowling panels, and like uses and of the kind in which a stud 12 rotatably mounted in the panel 1 has lateral projections which pass through an elongated aperture in the support and are brought, by giving the stud rotation through approximately 90‹, into position transverse to the opening and into co-operation with cam surfaces carried by the support, the cam surfaces are associated with a tapered guide which leads the stud into correct engagement if the parts are slightly out of register. As shown, the tapering guide 17 is tubular, of oval cross-section and with a terminal flange 18 formed with cam surfaces 26 up which the surfaces 15 of a T-form stud end 14 ride into snap-engagement with depressions 27, rotation towards fastening position being limited by shoulders 28. Flange 18 also serves for attachment of the guide to one limb of a U-form spring 19 the other limb of which is secured to the support 2. In one alternative arrangement the spring is of arched form with in-turned or out-turned feet secured to the support, and in. another form the spring is replaced by a rubber bush within which the guide is mounted. In all cases the inner end of the guide is spaced from the support far enough to allow the requisite play of the spring or bush for fastening and release purposes, but abuts against the inner face of the support under undue strain to offer solid resistance to separation of the panel from the support and to limit distortion of the spring or bush. As shown in Fig. 1 the leading end of the stud end 14 is rounded and the faces 15 are inclined to the stud axis, and in Fig. 3 these parts are also rounded transversely whilst the. sides are inclined and merge into a reduced portion 13 of the stud shank. The stud has a countersunk head 10 with screw-driver slot 11 and seats flush in a sunk portion 30 of a stiffener 3 secured to panel. 1. An ejecting spring 29 may be used .below the head 10 to raise it above the surface of the panel when the stud is in release position. The aperture in stiffener 3 is smaller than stud head 10 and end 14, and the stud is rotatably anchored by forcing end 14 through the aperture and then tapping out any distortion of member 3'which results.
