Abstract
556,828. Plate clamping mechanism. ELVY, C. June 16, 1943, No. 8245. Addition to 533,984. [Classes 44 and 80 (i)] - Plate clamping mechanism according to the parent Specification is provided with means for withdrawing the central wedge member consisting of a member 10, Fig. 1, pivoted at the projecting end 3 of the wedge and having a cam surface 13 that engages the end of the casing 1. The pin is guided by a hole in a nut member 14 forming an adjustable end to the casing by which the clamping effect may be increased. The flat side of the member 10 acts as a thumb - piece when inserting the clamp. The end of the wedge member is recessed on opposite sides, the recesses engaging the edges 16 on the parts 6 when in the expanded position to act as locking means preventing slacking back under vibration. The hole in the nut 14 is slightly elliptical and the parts 6 have a tendency to spring apart thus providing a friction lock every half revolution to prevent the nut being lost either in transit or in the tool box. In a modification the casing is replaced by a bowed spring 17, Fig. 5, and the cam engages the ends of the parts 6 of the pin.
