Abstract

555,063. Reinforcing insole-lips. BRITISH UNITED SHOE MACHINERY CO., Ltd. (United Shoe Machinery Corporation). Jan. 29, 1942, No. 1221. Addition to.537,981. [Class 17 (i)] The machine described in the parent Specification is improved. The strip-applying device comprises a number of rotatable spurred discs, one of which engaging the channel is movable heightwise of the insole relatively to another engaging the main portion, to allow for channels of different depth. The cutter lies at an angle to the strip so that the cut is diagonal of the strip. The upper feed roll 66 is mounted on a yoke 54 pivoted at 56 and normally held in inoperative position by a spring 106. The yoke carries a guide 72 adjustable to engage the outer face of the rib and feather of the insole, the feather portion being between the rolls. A rock shaft 82 carries a lug 84 and screw 86 actuating a spring pressed plunger 94 to depress the yoke 54. The rock shaft is actuated by a lever 122 resiliently connected to an arm 146 actuated by a treadle 160. The later portion of the depression of the treadle rocks a lever 168 to engage a friction clutch driving the feed rolls. Toggle links 152, 156 connect the treadle and the arm 146. The rock-shaft 82 carries a casting 174 heated by a unit 176 and carrying an applying roll 178 comprising a pair of spurred disks 186 and a single disk 194 positioned to enter the channel and urged towards it by a spring 198. A wrapping finger 214 operating as described in the prior Specification carries a roll 224 co-operating with a fixed cam and urged there-against by a spring 230. As the rock-shaft 82 is swung the roll travels along an incline 236 and the finger swings against the strip S and presses it against the roll. Grooves in the finger prevent dulling of the spurs. The rock-shaft is moved axially by a cam to press the margin of the strip against the inner face of the rib of the insole. The strip is led through a guide 260 on a lever 262 actuated by a resilient link 290 connected to an arm on the rock-shaft to swing the strip close to a heater 276 pivoted at 278 and adjustable by an eccentric 280. The shears are inclined to the strip so that they cut at an angle. They are actuated by a solenoid as described in the prior Specification, the switch being closed by a kneepad 390 at the end of a lever which is locked by a rod 394 when the treadle is depressed, so that the shears cannot be actuated when the applying roll is in operative position. A second treadle 432 allows the operator to sit if desired.
