Abstract

553,551. Sliding-clasp fasteners. GRANT, H. B., and LIGHTNING FASTENERS, Ltd. Nov. 24, 1941, Nos. 15125/41 and 5871/42. [Class 44] To allow separation of the stringers of a sliding-clasp fastener when the slider is at the top end with the fastening closed, the slider is arrested by top stops which abut within the slider, one or both of the stops being resilient or resiliently mounted so that, by exerting additional force, the slider may be moved beyond the stops. As shown, the stops abutting within the slider 8 are both resilient, each being in the form of a semi-elliptical spring 5 the inturned ends of which are received in a split sleeve 6 clamped on the beaded edge 3 of the tape 2. The bead 3 of one stringer terminates a short distance above the fastener elements 4 and is provided at its end with a tag 9 or other means to prevent fraying. The springs 5 are strong enough to arrest the slider in the position shown when normal force is applied to the slider, but additional force compresses the springs so that the slider can move beyond the stops and clear of end 9. The unbeaded portion of the tape can then be removed laterally through the slot of the slider and the fastening undone by lateral pull on the tapes. The slider is retained on the bead of the other tape, its endlong removal therefrom being prevented by a stop of usual form or, as shown, by folding back the end 10 of the tape and securing it by stitching. In a modification the spring 5, instead of being in one piece as shown, is laminated. In another form described the stop is in one piece of arched form the ends of which are bifurcated and clamped on the bead, the central portion of the arch being resilient. In a further form the stop is rigid and is clamped in contact with the tape edge by a member having an aperture through which the stop projection extends. In this case the stop is displaced bodily inwards compressing the beaded edge of the tape the resilience of which is relied on to give the required spring or resilient effect. The lower ends of the stringers have separable fittings, not shown, of the usual pin and socket type.
